Vivian Rautio runs the passenger ferry out to the light, four crossings a day, from ice-out to the end of September. She is fifty-one, divorced, and entirely finished with being anybody's project. The season is fourteen weeks long, she makes her whole year in it, and she has never once needed a deckhand who works nights.
Teodoro Ferraro applies anyway, and he is the best one she has ever had, and he is only available after eight in the evening.
He is worth the inconvenience. He is worth quite a lot of inconvenience. He can read weather off the water an hour before it arrives, he fixes an engine she was told was scrap, and he is the first man in a decade to look at her like the answer is obviously yes and to wait to be asked anyway.
Sunlight does not burn him. It costs him the entire day, and it makes him loud, and findable — which in a county of two thousand people, in the one season when the population quadruples and nobody is accounted for, is the most dangerous thing that can happen to him.
